Eyelid Reduction Surgery (Blepharoplasty, Eyelid Lift, Eyelid Bags)
Our eyes are the most prominent features on our face. They are what people notice first when you meet them, so the look of our eyes plays an important role in how attractive and young we appear. As you age, the skin loses its elasticity causing loose folds to develop on the upper eyelids and deepening creases on the lower eyelids. Hereditary factors and sun exposure also contribute to puffiness, deep lines and wrinkles around your eyes.
The normal aging process causes the stretching of the eyelid skin which results in the sagging of the fat around the eyes, excess wrinkles, and a bulging appearance in the upper and lower eyelids. The aging process can cause unwanted changes in expression which makes us look older than we really are. These types of changes can cause visual impairment, as well as emotional distress.
An eyelid reduction surgery (blepharoplasty) is designed to give a more youthful look to your eyes. It may consists of upper eyelids, lower or even both.
New and Traditional Techniques
Traditional Eyelid Reduction Surgery (Blepharoplasty, Eyelid Lift)
If you are worried about your tired eyes, eyelid reduction surgery (blepharoplasty) could be the ideal solution to brighten up your appearance. An incision is made in the your eyelid crease. Once it’s healed, it is not visible when the eye is open. On the lower eyelid, the incision is made along the lash line and is invisible when covered by lashes.
The Transconjunctival Approach
For lower eyelid reduction surgery (blepharoplasty), a new technique allows an incision inside the lower lid. This incision is made without a knife (bladeless blepharoplasty). Through this incision, the fat can be removed easily, but excess skin cannot be obviated. No stitches are required.
Dr. Myint can perform this procedure on an outpatient basis in his own office surgical suite, or at a certified surgical center. After the surgery, it’s important that you have someone that can drive you home, and for the next 24 hours prepare to have a person care for you.
Recovery: What to Expect
Following the surgical treatment, the area surrounding the eyes will remain swollen. After the first day, it will start to subside. Also, slight blurring is quite normal. In 4-5 days, stitches will be removed and some bruising will continue for about 10 days. However, you can start wearing makeup to conceal this. Within a period of 1 week, you will be able to resume your day-to-day activities. It may take about 6 months for the scars to lose their redness. It’s important to understand that when the fat is removed, the bags under the eyes will not reoccur. Wrinkling may reoccur but with laser resurfacing, wrinkles around the eyes can be treated effectively.
